Understanding Social Anxiety: The SPIN Assessment

The Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN) is a widely-used, clinically validated self-report questionnaire designed to assess the severity of social anxiety symptoms. Developed by researchers at Duke University, the SPIN evaluates three dimensions of social anxiety: fear, avoidance, and physiological symptoms. It consists of 17 items rated on a scale from 0 to 4, producing a total score that helps clinicians gauge severity.

Social anxiety disorder affects approximately 12 percent of adults at some point in their lives, making it one of the most common mental health conditions. Symptoms range from mild discomfort in social situations to debilitating fear that interferes with work, relationships, and daily activities. Early identification through screening tools like the SPIN is an important first step toward effective treatment.

Evidence-Informed Treatment for Social Anxiety

At ZipHealthy, our licensed therapists specialize in evidence-informed treatments for social anxiety including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and our Social Confidence Group program. If your SPIN score suggests elevated social anxiety, schedule a consultation with one of our therapists. Call (479) 259-1390 to get started.

What to Expect from Social Anxiety Treatment

Treatment for social anxiety typically begins with a comprehensive clinical assessment to understand the specific situations that trigger your anxiety and the avoidance patterns that maintain it. Your therapist will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan using evidence-based techniques. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps you identify and challenge the negative thought patterns that fuel social anxiety, while gradual exposure exercises build confidence in real-world situations. Research supports the effectiveness of evidence-based treatment for social anxiety. Individual progress varies based on symptom severity and engagement in the therapeutic process.

Our Social Confidence Group provides a supportive environment where you can practice social skills alongside others who share similar challenges. Group therapy has been shown to be particularly effective for social anxiety because it provides built-in opportunities for real-time practice and feedback in a safe, structured setting. Whether you prefer individual therapy, group therapy, or a combination of both, our Bentonville office and telehealth options make it easy to access the support you need.
